I understand that my friend, Mr Tookey, is deserving of the appointment of Assayer to the Mint at Hong Kong.
I am, as you very well know, not qualified to judge of Mr Tookey's achievements from any personal knowledge of the subjects he professes, but what is perhaps of equal importance, I know that as a Chemist and Metallurgist he is highly valued by many qualified judges.
Further, I have known Mr Tookey intimately for years, & have a high opinion of his talents, of his assiduity and of his varying courtesy and good temper.
When I say that he is an honest man in the widest sense of the word, and a gentleman, I have said anything about his personal qualifications which I deem necessary.
(Signed) W. R. Grove
The Master of the Mint.
